Why do I want 'Africa' to win? Why am I cheering for one team more than any other? Why is 'underdog' somehow associated in my mind with certain imagined communities (i.e. nations) more than others? What is the relationship between 'underdog' and the imagining? I think this is the social-construction of GEOGRAPHY and RANK that I find provocative in Fifa (and on Planet Earth).
Terrific morning of futbol. I enjoyed the Ghana/Serbia game more than the Algeria/Slovenia match, but that could have been because I was under-caffeinated at 7:30 AM. Both games saw a player expelled on a red card, and in each instance the team playing with 10 lost -- Algeria by one, Serbia by one.
Group D looks like it is going to give us good stuff!
Other interesting news: 16 Al Jazeera journalists/staff had a scare-- the plane taking them to today's Algeria/Slovenia match had to turn around and return to the Johannesburg airport for an emergency landing! And the US team apparently encountered elephants on the road between their lodging and the stadium. Serbia and Ghana both have Serbian coaches, and brothers might face each other in the Germany-Ghana match on June 23rd.
